|
|
The Safe Tourism project on the island of Boa Vista is finally becoming a reality. A total of 13 soldiers are on hand to patrol the island’s most critical beaches as a part of the program, which is aimed at reducing the number of robberies and muggings targeting tourists. The pioneering security plan has begun on Boa Vista and will later be implemented on other islands, including Sal. In the program, the National Police, the Armed Forces, tourist businesses and the Department of Tourism have joined forces to salvage the image of Cape Verde as a tourist destination.
The project has placed 13 military personnel on the terrain to patrol Boa Vista’s most critical beaches in the first step of a security plan intended to reduce the worrisome number of muggings that have targeted tourists in recent months on the island’s beaches. The safety plan will be in effect for one year and will undergo periodic evaluations.
The plan began with two dune buggies and one all-terrain vehicle, all of which were sponsored by tourism-sector businesses on the island, who are, after all, those who have most to gain with a reduction in or the elimination of crime on its beaches.

The article states 13 military personel have been placed on the island! Can someone on the island please confirm this has happened.
Or is it again a case of publishing something way before it is implemented!

Andre,
I beleive that these soldiers are the same as those affiliated to the Turtle Foundation, so infact they would probably have been on Boa Vista anyway? |

The "Safe Tourism Project", implemented three months ago on the island of Boa Vista, has made the crime against tourists decrease considerably, especially on beaches. The deputy Head of the Police on Boa Vista, Viriato Baptist said, "Since implementing the Safe Tourism Project, three months ago, crime has fallen considerably in the beaches of the island of Boa Vista. The project has been very successful and came to give more security to tourists, "notes the deputy head.
The "Safe Tourism Project" is aimed mainly at preventing violence and crime against tourists, in a logic of policing and partnership with all social sectors who want a safe environment and tarnquilityin one of the tourist islands of the country. The project is coordinated by the National Police, in partnership with the Judicial Police, the Armed Forces, tour operators, Directorate General of Tourism, NGOs and civil society.
Because of the success, Viriato Baptista does not hide his satisfaction and said that the plan is to continue, as it gives more security and development to keep pace with the island's dunes.
