The Hotel Guest Traffic Inquiry indicates that more than 97,000 tourists entered Cape Verde’s hotel establishments in the third quarter of 2010, representing a 17.5% increase over the same period last year. The data comes from the National Statistics Institute (INE), which highlights the fact that 14,500 more tourists checked into Cape Verdean hotel establishments in the third quarter of this year than during the same period last year. The total number of nights slept in Cape Verdean hotel establishments reached 653,597 in the first quarter of 2010, a 22.7% increase over the third quarter of 2009.
Hotels remain the most sought-after lodging establishments, representing 83.3% of the total number of check-ins. They are followed by bed and breakfasts, with approximately 6.4% of all entries, and boarding houses, with 4%. The proportions are similar in terms of nights slept, with hotels responding for 93.4%, bed and breakfasts 2.3% and boarding houses 1.8%.
The island of Boa Vista leads the country in terms of lodging, with 38.6% of all hotel check-ins, followed by Sal, with 36.6%, and Santiago, with 13.2%. The number of nights slept come in the same order: Boa Vista, with 49.5%, Sal with 42% and Santiago 4.4%.
The main market from which tourists to Cape Verde come continues to be the United Kingdom, with 20.6% of all entries, followed by Portugal, Italy, Germany and France, which account for 19.1%, 15%, 9.7% and 8% of entries, respectively. In terms of number of nights slept, the United Kingdom leads the way as well with 28.6% of the total, followed by Portugal (16.6%), Italy (16.5%), Germany (14.5%) and France (6.8%). Residents of Cape Verde totaled 14.6% of hotel and lodging establishment check-ins and 5.5% of nights slept.
Tourists coming from the United Kingdom preferred the islands of Sal and Boa Vista as destinations, representing 50.8% and 48.7% of nights slept, respectively, and chose hotels as their establishments of preference (99.7%). Portuguese tourists preferred the island of Boa Vista (60.3%), followed by Sal (27%).
Italian tourists overwhelmingly chose Sal as their main destination, with 52.7% of nights slept, followed by Boa Vista (45.9%). German tourists showed a preference for Boa Vista (50.8%) as their main destination, followed by Sal (46.8%).
80.6% of French tourists to Cape Verde chose Boa Vista as their main destination, with 88.7% of all nights slept spent in hotels. German tourists were those who spent the most time in the country, with an average of 9.8 nights each. Tourists from the UK and the Netherlands remained an average of 9.2 and 8.1 nights in Cape Verde, respectively, while Cape Verdeans stayed an average of 2.3 nights in hotel establishments per trip.
During the third quarter of 2010, the average bed occupancy rate in the country’s hotels stood at 53%. Boa Vista was the island with the highest bed occupancy rate (90%), followed by Sal, with 48%. Hotels showed the highest average occupancy rate, with 64%, while bed and breakfasts and boarding houses both showed occupancy rates of 18%.
