Asphalting of Sal Rei-Bufareira road to begin on Boa Vista

24 September 2009

The road that connects the town of Sal Rei to Bufareira on the island of Boa Vista will begin to be asphalted either late this year or early in 2010. The road will be the island’s first modern highway infrastructure. The government, through the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transportation, has just launched a public bid to select the company that will carry out construction work. The opening of proposals is expected to take place by October.

“If everything goes as planned, work on the Sal Rei-Bufareira road will begin between late this year and early 2010, and will be concluded within about one year,” said a Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation source.

The project for the road is budgeted at approximately 200 million escudos and is being financed by the Portuguese Development Cooperation Institute. “The 7 km-long road will be the first modern, asphalted road on Boa Vista,” says the source.

2 questions - where is Bufareira, and wasn't the airport to Sal Rei road the first modern asphalted road on Boa Vista? Or has it been washed away by the floods?!!

Hi Bert,

Bufareira is the home of Dada, NE of Sal Rei, not far from the wreck on the N coast, a very difficult sandy road to cover.

The report says 1st modern highway, so I presume it will be dual carriageway ie more modern than Sal Rei to Rabil road. I only presume there is enough funding for a more modern road, funding not being adequate for the same standard of road when the Sal Rei to Rabil road was commissioned 2006 or whenever! Bufareira by my recollection has a small population, will check Wikipedia, unless Bufareira is zoned for major future expansion, will check the Vera Brok publication!

Found on Wikipedia:

Baforeira is a village in the northern part of the island of Boa Vista in the Cape Verde archipelago. The village is around 20 km east-northeast of the island capital of Sal Rei and about 15 km northwest of Norte and is linked with the road with to João Galego and the road linking Sal Rei and Norte, the steep mountains makes it difficult to access the Alto Mira and boats mainy does not use to that area.
GeographyThe village is situated in the dry desert climate and it receives little or no precipitation annually. Farmlands are mainly of cattle and rarely some fruits and are nearly the size of the football field, many foodstuffs are received from the northern and the southern parts of the nation. The scorching Deserto da Viana, a flat desert dominates the southwestern portion, mountains to the south, the valley in the central portion, small mountains and hills to the north and the Atlantic Ocean further north.
The village is in the island's low class. Most of the houses are either built with mud and brick or stone and concrete, several houses are built with either steel reinforced concrete or with stone and wood. All of its population are farmers and are based in agriculture. Some farms are in the form of paddies and stone walls. However, a part of the needy materials comes from the island capital, the island capital and the diaspora. But for other needs, electricity, communications and appliances are partially available in the area as well as phone lines since the late-20th century. A part of the necessities also comes from the island capital.

Interestingly in Vera Brok's publication of projected populations on the island for 2050, Bofareira is not mentioned as a growth point, also this new road is not on the map of projected future roads!!

Regards

Andre

Regarding Bufareira + The Turtle Foundation found this on Noscasa website:

Turtle Foundation gives transportation subsidy
10/02/2009

The Turtle Foundation, an international turtle protection institution that has operated on the island of Boa Vista since last June, will pay for the transportation of 13 students who must travel every day from the northern region of the island to attend class at the high school in the town of Sal Rei. Each student will receive 1,500 escudos per month throughout the rest of the 2008/2009 school year.

The transportation subsidy for the students from the north of Boa Vista is part of a social program the Turtle Foundation has been developing with villages in the Boa Vista countryside located near the coasts where turtles lay their eggs.

In early March, the sea turtle protection organization will repair the Bufareira kindergarten alongside other partners. The school will be entirely remodeled and will be fitted with a restroom and new furnishings.

These social activities in the villages and settlements of northern Boa Vista are intended to encourage the local population to become involved in the defense of the various species of sea turtles that frequent the island.

This Thursday, September 30, ceremonies will be held on Boa Vista, to mark the start of the works at the port of Sal Rei, and the road between Sal Rei and Bofareira.

This event will be attended by the Minister of State for Infrastructure, Transport and Telecommunications, Manuel Inocencio Sousa.

Interesting. ASemana stated 24.09.09 that the road would commence late 2009, early 2010. What is a few months!? Blame it on the recession! At least they are starting!
