The year 2011 entered with darkness on the island of Boa Vista. There was a power outage that hit almost all the villages from 22:00 on New Years Eve until 10:00 the following morning.

This situation that took the shine off the New Year's Eve celebrations and left people of Boa Vista very angry. While local people preparing to see in the New Year, the electricity went down. This caused the abandonment and cancellation of many events and parties, and to make matters worse there were no fireworks bursting in the skies to toast the New Year. The Local Council had decided not to fund a firework event this year.

I presume the big hotels were fine as they have back-up generators! I feel for the locals. With upcoming elections, could this influence votes?!
