This Saturday, September 25th, the island of Boa Vista hosts the 9th edition of the Festival of the Morna, sponsored by the Association of Musicians of Boa Vista (AMBV). The event will feature the participation of ten local artists, and representatives of all the islands of Cape Verde, with the exception of the island of Fogo. The diaspora will also be represented at the event, with the participation of Amândio Barbosa, resident in Portugal, but a descendant of Boa Vista.
Unlike previous years, where the festival honored personalities of the island this year, we intend to honor "Boa Vista, and its Morna" and the representatives from each island will sing in their own variant of Creole. The president of AMBV, Pancracio Tomar, explains that this is a way to thank the people of the several islands that are working on Boa Vista, and thus contributing to the development of the island.
According to Pancracio Tomar, better known as Kaká, this year's festival commitment is to quality and will be interpretations of 57 "Mornas". As for expectations for public participation, Kaka said: "The festival has become a firm favourite, everyone is looking forward to it, and not just the older people but also young people and even tourists."
The Mornas Festival is one of a kind in Cape Verde. The first edition was held in 2001, with the great input form the Association of Musicians of Boa Vista, especially Kaka and Noel Fortes. |
