hats off to the news of the world. an excellent article promoting boa vista, the writers enthusiasm for the island and all its attractions came from the heart and not from a press release!!
after opening the piece with some pulse quickening fishing action he swiftly turned his literary skills to singing the praises of the rui karamboa as an excellent all inclusive resort and all the activities on offer. towards the end he was able to accurately described boa vista and give an overview of cape verde.
the article was well written, light in technical complexity and flowed easily down the page. he used his families experience to inject the human touch in this holiday report that highlighted individual and group leisure activities. the use of effective images topped off an article that will see bookings to boa vista soar in the near future. |

thompsons et al have always catered for the mass market and i'm sure the better off news of the world readers are good customers. their all inclusive packages to the rui, whilst not perfect, have put boa vista on the map as a medium haul destination from northern europe.
the reasons the mass market may want to visit boa at the moment are only constrained by time/cost and desire to holiday somewhere different. the uk print media has touted cape verde as a 'new destination' for many years. the last article i saw recently was in 'take a break'. anyone making a holiday decision must now consider cape verde as a destination.
technology marches on, the boeing dreamliner 787 (when they actually build it) will be flying to costa rica, brazil and of course cape verde from the uk. thompsons plans to purchase quite a few and these planes will fly longer, cheaper and with more comfort than anything around at the moment. the people who will holiday in these places are thompson customers loyal to the homogenised product and in their own right trail blazers...
some people have suggested cape verde will be a destination a bit more exclusive, the new caribbean, a venue for the more discerning tourist who would pay extra to escape "the madding crowd". to achieve this all prices have to be high, a supply/demand thing.
i don't think this will happen. hopefully boa will not become the new blackpool in the sun, maybe santa maria will get that title, but why would tourists from a higher socio-economic group visit? the island has fantastic beaches, landscape, wildlife, local culture etc which are important to tourists but where do they stay?
the planned tourist zones around sal rei are mostly for apartments whilst the beaches in the south are zoned for hotels/resorts. the local council favour the standard apartment block and depending on the individual developer it could be small studios for the italians and 1/2 bed units for northern europeans. The resorts/hotels on the southern beaches will strung along two deep, whilst probably eliminating the red sea riviera, maybe not as exclusive as it could be.
however not all the apartment accomodation will be the spacious penthouse with great sea views that commands a premium. the units below the penthouse with balcony views of some elses wall will also have to be rented... and this all relies on cheaper airfares! these will come, the budget airlines will bring the more independently minded who will fill the apartment blocks, ready to experience all boa’s attractions but not at any price….
Sorry for the long winded reply but in answer to your question, yes more plane loads of news of the world readers. Think canaries not caribbean…… a two speed cape verde, one for mass tourism and one for smaller exclusive out of the way resorts... |

Brian,
Don't get me wrong. I agree with you totally. News of the World is not the only paper to feature Boa recently. The Mail also had a good article. I agree that the News of the World has a wide range of readers. I was getting at their knack of making shocking revelations... snooker players... cricketers... footballers. I also believe many of their readers would want an Irish pub, an English chippy...., not what I and others would like to see on Boa.They can have the views of someone else's wall!! Fortunately News of the World are not an airline..... but then.... you could get an eyeful on a flight.... could be a pleasant change!! lol.
Many of us have expectations for Boa. However the final picture is likely to be very different. You have eloquently explained why.
Brian, you not perhaps a subscriber to News of the World?! Would not have thought so!
Regards

ha ha, yes the news of the world is very good at what it does and thompsons et al know that... here's a prediction, in the next year or two an irish pub will open in sal rei ha ha but with regard to a chippy i think santa maria has a better chance, maybe.
i understand your point of view but eventually the laws of supply and demand will play their part. what has happened in the canaries will happen in cape verde, but maybe not on every island however. i think the powers that be just want as many tourists to visit the islands as possible.
you and your contacts may have a better idea of what the decision makers big plan is for boa! i can only guess that sal would be a blueprint they will follow......... you are right i'm not a subscriber to notw, however i believe reading across the broad spectrum of media is the only way to get closer to the truth.
good luck, b |
