Rains expected to continue for next two days
27-08-08
Rain is expected to contineu falling for the next two days throughout the country. Cape Verde is currently being affected by an atmospheric depression, which has caused downpours in most of the archipelago - the rains began falling first on the leeward islands, but have now spread to the windward islands as well.
Raquel Gonçalves of the National Meteorology and Geophysics Institute on Sal said that the thunderstorms currently being felt over Praia are expected to continue. The forecast is the same for the rest of the island of Santiago, which is expected to remain wet throughout Wednesday morning.
The thunderstorms are expected to spread to the country’s other islands by the end of the day, and the forecast remains similar for tomorrow as well.

Following the recent and very uncharacteristic rain on Boa Vista it was predicted that parts of the island would turn green. Well here are the pictures to prove it. Taken last week on Boa Vista, they show a truly green oasis and a green hillside above the marine club at the end of Cabral Beach. It is surely many years since the island was last this green?

Stunning! Awesome!
In 6 visits I have not seen this! November 2006 I saw maize fields behind the VentaClub on coming in to land! Great stuff Dave + Diane. I am envious! I truly hope that these uncharacteristic rains become more of a norm, yes there is the risk of some flooding, however the greenery means food in these expensive times, and must also surely raise the mood of the locals!

On our way back from the old ceramic tile factory on Chaves beach we saw people planting maize behind the Venta Club. I was surprised to see how dark and rich the soil looked and it was one of the few places that we saw that was able to absorb the rain water. Most places the water just laid there until it evaporated. F M Developements had a pump going for days to get the water out of the footings. The flat lands between the night club and Sal Rei were all under water when we arrived and was still the same when we left a week later. The salt flats behind VC 1&2 was a lake. As this is the only way that we have seen Boavista we will expect a shock next time we visit.

Dave,
The island is of volcanic origin, so there where there is fertile soil the water sinks down to the rock, there where the rock is close to the surface, it will collect until it evaporates away!
VC itself, much evidence of flooding, the basement garages?
You will not be shocked when you next visit, I am sure you were expecting a barren state, you were priviledged to see all the greenery!
Regards

Dave, those photos are awesome. I cant believe how i can get this excited by green landscapes, but considering the islands usual look, it is fabulous. You were extremely lucky to be visiting at this time. It would be very rare and unusual if the island looked the same on your next trip out.

Out of intrigue...has the rain since subsided on Boa Vista?
Also as i am going to Boa vista in November i was wondering as to whether it goes chilly of an evening at this time of year or not? |

Claire,
The rain on Boa Vista has certainly decreased, at least according to the weather forecasts on the website. If you look at these forecasts you will see that the night temperature is usually the same as the day time temperature due to the influence of the vast Atlantic Ocean surrounding Boa Vista. This situation is the same in November but the temperatures can drop as low as 20C which is ideal during the day when the sun is out but it can feel a bit chilly in the evening especially since the winds start to increase around this time of year.
Regards.
