The new hospital building on the outskirts of Sal Rei is to be officially opened by the Cape Verde Prime Minister, José Maria Neves, on Monday 4th May.

The hospital building has been ready for some time but has been awaiting the arrival of equipment and trained staff to become operational. Currently the medical needs of the local population are being met by the clinic at the corner of the main square in Sal Rei next to the church of St. Isobel.

Regards,

John Dowling

Blow is a rough translation from Portuguese regarding the opening of the new hospital and health care facility on Boa Vista.

The Health Center on Boa Vista will open its doors on Tuesday, 5th May. The inauguration is scheduled for 15:00 and will be chaired by the Head of Government, José Maria Neves, and the Minister of Health, Basilio Ramos. A large gathering is expected to attended the ceremony for the opening of an this new Boavistan facility that is most desired by the local people.

The new Health Center will relieve the existing Health Precinct, currently working in precarious conditions. At the inauguration ceremony, scheduled for 15:00 on Tuesday afternoon, will be present the prime minister, José Maria Neves, the Minister of Health, Basilio Ramos, the mayor of the island, João Pinto, and a huge list of guests.

The inauguration of the new Health Center will be a moment of glory for the Boavistan people taking account the failure to have a hospital on an island such as Boa Vista, which is committed to being one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the world. The opening of this infrastructure, however, is the second victory of the for the health service on Boa Vista, given that recently the island saw its first pharmacy open, thus reducing the problem of the supply of medicines.

Health is therefore less compromised in Boa Vista, given that, in addition to emergency and general care, from now on you can count, too, in which general medical consultations, home visits, radiographs, analysis clinics, pharmacies, care for children and women - the protection of child health, vaccination, an outpatient department of pediatrics, health education, gynecology, family planning, screening and referral, etc..

The new Health Centre on Boa Vista, is located in the heart of the town of Sal Rei is a building consisting of a single storey building, a central patio and internal garden. This unit includes a health service administration, modules for outpatient, hospital and support services.

The clinic consists of bank of emergency, pharmacy, clinical laboratory tests, radiology essential, but also has a part reserved for external consultation and public health. The section of internment has rooms for general medicine (seven beds), pediatrics (six beds), maternity (six beds) and psychiatry (one bed). In support services there is a kitchen, laundry, mortuary with refrigerator, emergency generator, incinerator, among others.

It is noted that the Health Centre of Boa Vista is a project funded by the OPEC Fund for International Development.

Boa Vista Health Center to be unveiled Tuesday

04-05-09
The Boa Vista Health Center will open its doors tomorrow, May 5, at 3:00 pm, in a ceremony to be presided over by Prime Minister José Maria Neves. Neves arrived on the island yesterday along with Minister of Health Basílio Ramos and a delegation specifically to unveil one of the island’s most eagerly awaited public infrastructures.

One year after the completion of construction, the Health Center will finally be opened, thus easing some of the pressure on the local Health Department delegation, which operates under somewhat precarious conditions. The unveiling ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister José Maria Neves, Minister of Health Basílio Mosso Ramos, Boa Vista mayor João Pinto Almeida and a list of guests from both public and private sectors on the island.

The opening of the new Health Center will be a moment of satisfaction for the island’s population, considering the lack of a hospital on Boa Vista, one of Cape Verde’s most important tourist destinations. The opening of the facility comes less than a month after the opening of the island’s first pharmacy.

The Boa Vista Health Center is located in the heart of the town of Sal Rei and includes an administrative sector and modules for out-patient, in-patient and support services.

The out-patient sector is comprised of an emergency room, a pharmacy, a clinical analysis laboratory, a radiology center, and a public health section. The in-patient sector includes general medicine, pediatrics, maternity and psychiatry sections.

The Boa Vista Health Center was financed by the OPEC Fund for International Development. Construction alone cost some 140 million escudos.

Seriously, we had a good look at the hospital a few weeks ago and it looks impressive. Also, walking into the new pharmacy, just off the town square took us by surprise.Brand new gleaming and very clinical and smart.Speaking to local people, these 2 facilities have been long overdue for them and they are very exited by it.Along with the new town square ,play area and new commercial buildings being built , it looks as though Sal Rei will be a very smart place indeed.

Here is a recent picture of the new hospital just before it opened. New tarmac was being laid in front of the main building.

The picture above was taken the day before the opening ceremony, the ceremony was to take place at 3pm on the fifth of May but was delayed until later that day. As we left Boa Vista on Thursday May 7th, the hospital looked open, vehicles were parked in the car park and maintenance men were cleaning the lights outside.

Émigrés test Boa Vista’s health facilities

25 August 2009

Vacationing émigrés from the island of Boa Vista visited the island’s Health Center on Monday to get a feel for the situation of the health facilities available on their island of origin. The émigrés in question have actively participated in the improvement of health conditions on Boa Vista through donations of hospital supplies and equipment.Last year, an émigré couple donated beds, sheets and other equipment to the Boa Vista Health Department delegation. After the opening of the island’s Health Center, more émigrés donated hospital materials in order to improve the island’s health system by way of associations in France, Italy and Switzerland.

Yesterday, these associations, including Eco Chaves, from France, visited the Health Center in order to see how the equipment they donated is being used. Satisfied with what they saw, the émigrés promised to raise funds for more equipment in the countries in which they reside to send back to their home island.

Health Department delegate Adilma Soares will provide them with a list of materials needed at the Health Center. “The assistance from our émigrés is very important. They’ve helped a lot in the health sector, and we hope things will remain as such, because this Health Center needs help from every one of us. We are functioning well, in large part thanks to their help,” said Soares.

The émigrés visited the rooms, laboratories, examination rooms and other parts of the Health Center, speaking with the nurses and employees and conversing with the patients there as well.

“For us, it’s very important to see that our homeland is evolving, which is why we do everything we can to give our contribution to this development. Based on what we’ve seen here, conditions could almost be compared with those of hospitals in Europe. We’ll be going back happy. But we won’t stop here. We’re going to continue helping with what we can,” they promised, calling on greater collaboration from Cape Verdean authorities, including more flexibility on the part of customs services, which, according to the émigrés, have caused the most problems when sending equipment to Cape Verde.
